The Energy, Water, and Environment Research Center (EWERC) was established in January 2009 in recognition of the strategic importance of these research areas for southern Jordan, a region rich in renewable energy sources, oil shale, and vast mineral resources. The Center was envisioned as a hub for advancing research that supports the sustainable and efficient utilization of these resources.<\/p>\n

At the dawn of the 21st century, global concerns over energy shortages and the steep rise in oil prices highlighted the urgency of seeking alternative energy sources. Renewable energy emerged as a promising solution, motivating nations, including Jordan, to explore sustainable alternatives. Jordan stands among the pioneers in renewable energy adoption, given that approximately 96% of its energy is imported. Renewable sources offer unique advantages over conventional energy: they are naturally replenished, reduce dependency on depleting fossil fuels, and mitigate environmental impacts such as greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n

The Center addresses pressing environmental challenges, including urban air pollution, acid rain, oil spills, nuclear risks, and global warming. It focuses on harnessing solar energy, particularly through direct thermal-to-electric conversion via photovoltaic technologies, alongside wind and hydropower systems. These initiatives aim to secure a cleaner environment while providing reliable, sustainable energy for the future.<\/p>\n

Promoting awareness of renewable energy and optimal water management among Jordanian citizens is a key priority. The Center collaborates with diverse sectors engaged in research and development across the Kingdom, supporting sustainable development in energy and water. It emphasizes the role of academic institutions in economic growth by providing highly qualified personnel capable of driving innovation, development, and positive change across the nation, particularly in remote and desert areas. The Center is a member of the Global Network for Renewable Energy in Arid Regions, facilitating international collaboration on renewable energy research and sustainable desert energy utilization.<\/p>\n

Despite significant achievements in utilizing oil shale as an alternative fuel, there remains substantial potential for advancement. The Center is committed to supporting these efforts through the activation of university laboratories, workshops, and its specialized staff to expand research and applied projects in renewable energy, water, and environmental technologies.<\/p>\n

Vision<\/strong>
To be a leading research center in renewable energy while strengthening collaborations with wind and solar energy facilities, particularly in the Tafila region, and conducting high-impact research in water and environmental management. The Center aims to serve as a comprehensive knowledge source for environmental, water, and energy conditions in the region and to train students in solar and wind energy projects on campus and in surrounding areas.<\/p>\n
